Here is an image of the Sombra to Marine City ferry crossing that I talked about during the first day of class. Boarders can come in all sorts of different forms.

This blog discusses and documents the various cultural practices located at the geographical margins of the nation state. We have lived through a decade of contradictory ideas about the role of national borders. Our group is located in Windsor, Ontario, a small Canadian industrial city across the border from Detroit, though we welcome contributions about border cities and political re-mappings in other regions around the world.
Thanks Devon,
ReplyDeleteCould you tell us where this crossing is exactly? I think its nearby (within 2 hours drive) but I'm curious to know more about it. When you mentioned it in class I imagined vessel no larger than a row boat! This ferry looks quite serious.
The Sombra-Marine City (Bluewater) Ferry is an United States/Canadian cross-border ferry service which runs from Lambton County Road 33/St. Clair Parkway (a former alignment of Highway 40) in Sombra, Ontario to M-29 in Marine City, Michigan. On the Ontario/Canadian side, the dock is on King Street. On the Michigander/American side, the dock is on Main Street.
ReplyDeleteThe Bluewater Ferry currently runs two ships, the Daldean and the Ontamich. The Daldean is larger and can carry 12 cars, while the Ontamich is capable of ferrying 9 cars.
As of April 2008 the ferry toll is $ 6.00 (CAN or US) for an automobile.
On occasion the ferry may not be able to operate because of heavy ice build up on one shore or the other. Toll free information on the Bluewater Ferry is available at 877-892-3879.
The first departure from the Canadian Side is 0640 and from the US at 0700
