I ran across this article by accident on the RCMP website and thought I'd share:
http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/bi-if/index-eng.htm
It gives a little overview of the relationship between the Canadian-U.S. border and then goes into how it changed after 9-11. It then goes on to describe some of the 'myths' that have been hampering relations between the U.S. & Canada since 9-11 (ie. terrorists coming from Canada, etc.).

Thanks Shawna,
ReplyDeleteIts interesting that they are so forthcoming with addressing myths on the Canadian Border Agency site--I guess because there's been such a media circus in the US around this idea that Canada's borders are more suspicious and threatening because they're supposedly less scrutinized than those on the south. The Minuteman project in the US. is very active in fueling rumors about threats to national security. They form a large constituency in the Southwestern US and also have chapters in Maine, Ohio and Illinois. Three years ago, there was a suggestion in the local Detroit news that a Michigan chapter was about to form. I couldn't find any immediate evidence of one, but the rumor mill is very powerful in the US mainstream media.
